Bentonite is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate, generally impure clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite. There are different types of bentonite and their names depend on the dominant elements, such as potassium (K), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and aluminum (Al).
For industrial purposes, two main classes of bentonite exist: sodium and calcium bentonite
Sodium Bentonite: Sodium is the 'dominant' it is called sodium Bentonite if there is a lot of Sodium (Na) in between the crystal layers. Having the ability to absorb water several times its dry mass, sodium bentonite expands when wet. Due to its high colloidal properties it is extensively used in drilling mud for oil and gas wells and for geotechnical and environmental investigations. The property of swelling also makes sodium Bentonite useful as a sealant, particularly for the sealing of subsurface disposal systems for spent nuclear fuel and for quarantining metal pollutants of groundwater. Apart from these, Bentonite is available in the world, the sodium variety has high swelling and gelling properties along with good viscosity and liquid limit. Due to these factors, these Bentonite are widely used in various applications such as oil drilling, paints, pond sealants, cat litter, paper coatings, grease, and crayons.
Calcium Bentonite: It is a silicate, which is an extremely flat crystal flake that carries a relatively strong net-negative ionic charge. Such Calcium Montmorillonite silicates have attracted and attached to the potent mineral nutrients in the mountain soils and streams.
Calcium bentonite is a useful adsorbent of ions in solution. as well as fats and oils, being a main active ingredient of Fuller's Earth. These Bentonite are extensively used in various applications such as naturopathic, detoxification cosmetics, soil remineralization, growth catalyst, moisture retention disinfectants, desiccants water flocculation and air purification & filtering environmental decontamination oil production construction. Apart from this, these are used as supplement for new high-tech polymer material livestock and fish feed.
